On this date in 1512 (Feb. 2nd), a Taino chief named Hatuey was burned at the stake in Yara, Cuba for leading a revolt against the Spanish invaders. In speaking to his people, Hatuey pointed to a basket containing some gold and jewels and said: “Here is the God the Spaniards worship. For these they fight and kill and persecute us. They tell us, these tyrants, that they adore a God of peace and equality, and yet they usurp our land and make us their slaves. They speak to us of an immortal soul and eternal rewards and punishments, and yet they rob our belongings, seduce our women, and violate our daughters.” While tied to the stake, a Catholic priest asked Hatuey if he would accept Jesus and go to heaven.
