On this date in 1512 (Feb. 2nd), a Taino chief named Hatuey was burned at the stake in Yara, Cuba for leading a revolt against the Spanish invaders. In speaking to his people, Hatuey pointed to a basket containing some gold and jewels and said: “Here is the God the Spaniards worship. For these they fight and kill and persecute us. They tell us, these tyrants, that they adore a God of peace and equality, and yet they usurp our land and make us their slaves.
