Happy birthday, Dorothy Rabinowitz Stowe (Dec. 22, 1920 – July 23, 2010)! #Quaker. #Pacifist. Environmentalist. Anti-war activist. Anti-nuclear activist. Civil rights activist. Social worker. In 1961, Dorothy and her husband Irving moved to New Zealand to avoid paying U.S. taxes that would support the Vietnam War. A few years later, when New Zealand sent soldiers to Vietnam, the Stowes moved to Vancouver, Canada. In 1968 the U.S. announced plans for a series of nuclear tests on Amchitka Island, Alaska. Dorothy and Irving formed a group called the “Don’t Make A Wave Committee.” With fellow Quakers Jim and Marie Bohlen, the Stowes came up with the idea of sailing a boat into the nuclear test zone. In September 1971 they set sail on a chartered boat they named “Greenpeace.” Of course they were arrested by the Coast Guard before getting to Amchitka. But…
