Happy birthday, Emily Greene Balch (Jan. 8, 1867 – Jan. 9, 1961)! #Quaker. #Pacifist. #Socialist. Anti-war activist. Advocate for women’s rights. Fired from the faculty of Wellesley College during World War I for her opposition to the war. Helped found the Woman’s Peace Party in 1915. Born into a Unitarian family but converted to Quakerism in 1921. Winner of the Nobel Peace Prize in 1946 for her work with the Women’s International League for Peace & Freedom (WILPF). Never married. Her most significant relationships were with women. Born in Jamaica Plain, Massachusetts. Died in Cambridge, Massachusetts, the day after her 94th birthday. Buried in Forest Hills Cemetery, 95 Forest Hills Avenue, Boston, Massachusetts.

Happy birthday, A.J. (Abraham Johannes) Muste (Jan. 8, 1885 – Feb. 11, 1967)! #Quaker minister. #Pacifist. Anti-war activist. Civil rights activist. Labor activist. Briefly pastor of Fort Washington Collegiate Church (upper Manhattan, NYC) before becoming an independent Congregationalist minister, after which he became a Quaker minister in 1918. The Quaker meetinghouse where he served in Providence, Rhode Island, was headquarters for an assortment of pacifists and radicals. From 1937 to 1940 he was director of the Presbyterian Labor Temple in NYC (corner of 14th St. & 2nd Ave.; building still there). In 1940 he began a 13-year tenure as executive director of the Fellowship of Reconciliation. In 1956 he co-founded “Liberation” magazine with David Dellinger. He was active in the peace movement until his death at the age of 82. Born in Zierikzee, Netherlands. Died in New York City. Cremated.
