2013 Year in Review: Job Fair

Last year, we held our first Job Fair in April, 2013 at the William Way Community Center and invited companies, organizations, schools, and job-seekers to connect with potential employees and employers. At the time, other than our Town Hall, our Job Fair was our first large scale event, bringing together over twenty Job Fair exhibitors including the Benefits Data Trust, Community College of Philadelphia, PA Career Link Philadelphia, Pennsylvania State Civil Service Commission, Philadelphia Police Department, Southeastern Pennsylvania Transportation Authority (SEPTA), and many other organizations in healthcare, finance, higher education, and more.

In times of economic recession such as those we are facing today, it is increasingly important to bring together community resources and organizations in order to help those searching for a job and those groups who are searching for quality candidates for open positions. One of the positive comments I heard from constituents last year is that they enjoyed the fact that they had the opportunity to actually talk with company representatives at our Job Fair due to the smaller scale of the event compared to more massive job-seeking events that have long lines and are held in a huge venue.

We are really excited to bring back many of the same companies, schools, and organizations for this year’s event as well!

If you are interested, we are currently still accepting organizations and companies that would like to exhibit during our 2014 Job Fair, and we are also collecting names of constituents who are looking for jobs or career development and can attend our Job Fair on April 4th from 10AM-2PM at Peirce College. Reach out to the District Office of State Representative Brian Sims by phone: (215) 246-1501 , email: repsims@pahouse.net, or stop by in person at 21 S. 12th Street, Suite 182.

THIS AFTERNOON: A reminder that this afternoon after presenting at Facebook, I’m excited to be taking part in their “Open Dialogue” series which will allow me to take questions and interact with people from pretty much everywhere!

I’ll be talking about advocacy, activism and advancing LGBT civil rights. If you want to take part in the conversation, all you have to do is tune it at 2 p.m. PST (that’s 5 p.m. EST). Simply post questions and comments on my page and I’ll do my best to get to as many of them as I can!

Talk to you soon…

I wanted to let you know about a great exhibit that just opened at one of my favorite spots, the National Museum of American Jewish History. “Chasing Dreams: Baseball and Becoming American” is an exhibition about the important role baseball has played in the lives of American minority communities. It is the first large-scale exhibition to weave together the history of American sport, leisure, and national identity with the history of Jewish integration into American life.

The exhibit includes over 130 original artifacts, films and game footage, a database of American Jewish ballplayers, and lots of interactive media. The exhibit is paired with an awesome calendar of events ranging from a book club, speaker series, and a family fun day. For more information about the exhibit and to check out the events go to the “Chasing Dreams: Baseball and Becoming American” website: http://bit.ly/1daAqST
